Saudi Pro League: The New Powerhouse Rising in World Football

The global football landscape is evolving rapidly, and at the heart of this transformation stands the Saudi Pro League (SPL). What was once considered a lower-profile destination for players in their twilight years is now commanding international headlines, fan interest, and financial clout that rivals Europe’s most storied leagues. The catalyst? Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's Move to Al Nassr: The Domino Effect

In January 2023, Cristiano Ronaldo’s high-profile transfer to Al Nassr was more than a sporting decision—it was a statement. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner left Manchester United and Europe behind to accept a lucrative deal reportedly worth over €200 million annually. This move shocked the world and instantly placed the Saudi Pro League under a magnifying glass.

It was the first major shift of its kind in the modern era. Unlike the MLS trend of players joining post-peak, Ronaldo, though aging, proved he still had elite ability. His goals, leadership, and relentless mentality uplifted not just Al Nassr but the league as a whole. Soon after, other big names followed.

Big Names Flocking to the Desert

Following Ronaldo’s arrival, players like Neymar Jr. (Al Hilal), Karim Benzema (Al Ittihad), N'Golo Kanté, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mané, Aymeric Laporte, and many more packed their bags for the Middle East. The SPL has been able to offer massive salaries—some of the highest ever in football history.

Even top European managers have taken the leap, including Jorge Jesus, Stefano Pioli and Steven Gerrard. The vision is clear: Saudi Arabia aims not just to participate in world football but to dominate it.

This trend was further explored in the popular Netflix documentary series "The Rise of Saudi Football," which showcased behind-the-scenes development, state-backed investments, youth programs, and infrastructure enhancement.

The Money Factor: Salaries That Change the Game

It's no secret that Saudi clubs offer astronomical wages. Neymar reportedly signed for Al Hilal on a deal worth over €100 million per year. Vini Jr., according to sources like Fabrizio Romano, was offered a jaw-dropping €1 billion package for five years—an offer he turned down to remain with Real Madrid.

While younger players like Vini Jr. and others such as Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham may reject such offers to build legacy at top clubs, the SPL’s financial power is undeniably reshaping market dynamics.

Not Everyone is On Board

While many have praised the league’s rise, others remain skeptical. Coaches like Ronald Koeman have publicly criticized players leaving for Saudi, even stating that players like Steven Bergwijn might not be considered for the national team if they play outside of Europe's top leagues.

However, performances speak louder than perceptions. Ronaldo, despite being in Saudi, remains a key figure for Portugal, continuing to score in UEFA Nations League and qualifiers.

Stadiums, Youth Development & Vision 2030

One of the most compelling arguments for Saudi football's rise is its long-term vision:

  • Stadiums: State-of-the-art facilities with world-class capacity.

  • Youth Programs: Nationwide academies, technical partnerships with European clubs.

  • Women's Football: Investments in building a competitive women's league.

  • Management: Structured club operations, foreign technical directors, and elite medical support.

With the 2034 FIFA World Cup likely heading to Saudi Arabia, the Pro League is laying the foundation to not just host tournaments but to field globally competitive teams.

MLS vs SPL: The New Choice

The MLS was traditionally the retirement home for elite footballers. Beckham, Henry, and Ibrahimović all enjoyed late-career stints in the U.S. But now, players are heading to Saudi before they reach their twilight.

At 31, Neymar still has years of top-level football left. Others like Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinković-Savić joined in their prime. This shift challenges the notion that the SPL is only for players past their peak.

Can SPL Compete with the Premier League and La Liga?

Not yet- but it's on track. The Premier League remains the most-watched league globally, with La Liga and Serie A close behind. However, SPL’s growth in audience, stadium attendance, and social media engagement is exponential.

It may take years, but the SPL is building a competitive league that could rival Europe's elite, especially if younger players begin to view it as a viable long-term career move.

The Road Ahead

Saudi Arabia isn’t just throwing money for spectacle. With government backing, a focus on infrastructure, talent development, and star power, they’re writing a new footballing chapter.

As Ronaldo said: "This isn't the end of my career. This is a new beginning for football in Saudi Arabia."

He wasn’t wrong.
